A partir dessa hipótese, questionase: qual significado sociodiscursivo e ideológico estaria inerente à voz passiva no contexto jornalístico?
Abstract: This dissertation presents an analysis of the use of verbal voices (passive voice and active voice) in journalistic texts. The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in the Labovian approach (2008 [1972]) and the Theory of Linguistic Change (1968), which propose the quantitative analysis of variable linguistic phenomena. The author, as a journalist, observed certain characteristics in the linguistic treatment of femicide in news reports published in the press, particularly the predominance of the passive voice in texts that narrate crimes of violence against women. Based on this hypothesis, the study asks: do femicide news reports favor the passive voice? What sociodiscursive and ideological meanings are inherent in the passive voice in the journalistic context? The general objective of this dissertation is to understand how journalistic discourse participates in the construction of meanings about violence against women, especially through linguistic strategies that naturalize or mitigate the accountability of aggressors. The specific objectives of this study are: (i) to analyze the active and passive voices in femicide news reports whose sentences evoke the semantics of a violent event; (ii) to assess the linguistic and social variables that condition the choice of verbal voice; and (iii) to identify the roles and frames assigned to the subjects positioned in the texts (victim and aggressor), as well as the effects of representational forms. The corpus consists of 140 femicide news reports collected from 33 Brazilian news portals between 2000 and 2024. After collecting 376 tokens, the linguistic phenomenon was analyzed using the GoldVarb-X program, one of the statistical tools of Variationist Sociolinguistics. For the quantitative analysis, 363 tokens were coded according to three established variants: passive voice with agent, passive voice without agent, and active voice with overt subject. In addition, seven independent linguistic/social variables were monitored: reporter’s gender, news outlet, year of publication, location of the phenomenon within the news structure, syntactic roles of the prepositions por and após, semantic properties of the verb, and verbal tense. The results revealed that, in the first round of analysis, which contrasted the passive voice (with and without agent) and the active voice, the passive was favored in 70.8% of the cases, whereas the active voice accounted for 29.2% of the data. When the analysis was refined in the second round (passive voice without agent versus active voice), this variant represented 63.7% of the data, compared to 36.3% for the active voice. In the third round (passive voice with agent versus active voice), the active voice became predominant, with 59.9%, as opposed to the passive voice with agent, which totaled 40.1%. These results confirm that the most productive construction in the corpus was the agentless passive voice, a grammatical strategy that operates discursively to erase the author of the violent action. This phenomenon is noteworthy, given that the use of passive structures is not recommended in journalistic style manuals. The factors that favored the passive voice in the most significant round (agentless passive versus active voice) were the outlets g1 (.61) and UOL (.72), photo captions (.71), subheadings (.61), and leads (.56)—with particular emphasis on texts accompanying photographs. Regarding the verb variable, it was observed that assassinar (“to murder”) most strongly favored the agentless passive voice (.84). The data also indicated that violence against women is minimized in texts that emphasize the erasure of the agent: in 63.7% of the news reports, the perpetrator of the crime is omitted. Female sexualization is also identified in photo captions through stereotyped representations of women that bear no relation to the focus of the text; that is, there are linguistic patterns that (re)produce gender inequalities in news reports on femicide. Finally, the study showed that, of the 140 reports analyzed, only 5.71% included information about Ligue 180, the service that receives reports of violence against women.
