| Abstract: | In the 17th century, the Dutch West India Company (WIC) of the Republic of the Seven Provinces, now the Netherlands, founded several overseas settlements that later became major cities; among them Recife (Mauritsstad from 1637 to 1654) and New York (New Amsterdam from 1624 to 1661). Despite similarities, such as the presence of WIC as entrepreneur, their colonial function, and the importance of the Jewish community, these municipalities have yet to be closely examined for their visual and formal similarities and contrasts. By considering the concept of landscape within the framework of the social history of the Seven Provinces and their New World colonies, we propose a comparative approach based on the analysis and discussion of iconographic sources, our primary materials. Maps, paintings, and engravings are examined for their compositional arrangement, the elements they include (or omit), and the perspectives of traveling artists. By critically engaging with these representations, we discuss how these urban centers were constructed according to the cultural and subjective criteria that shaped them, highlighting the connections between the two municipalities within a unified historical narrative. |
