Abstract: | This commentary on Dafermos’ paper entitled “Developing a dialectical understanding of the crisis in cultural-historical and activity research” constructs a dialogue with González Rey’s ideas and conceptualizations in three different directions. Firstly, a dialectical concept of crisis is discussed, and a critical reflection on dominant post-modern approaches is elaborated. Secondly, the meaning of the concept of crisis within Vygotsky’s work is discussed, along with the conceptual developments and current challenges for the cultural-historical and activity community. Thirdly, González Rey’s Theory of Subjectivity is emphasized as a theoretical pathway to advance a dialectical understanding of crisis within cultural-historical approach. Some examples taken from research projects in the field of mental health are presented to illustrate the main theoretical arguments of this commentary. The construction of this dialogue is in line with Dafermos’ call for fostering dialogical spaces within the cultural-historical and activity research community in challenging times, so as to build new, alternative forms of collaboration and resistance at the international level. |
