Abstract: This study is linked to the Social Policy, State and Society Research line of the Postgraduate Program in Social Policy of the Department of Social Service at the University of Brasília – PPGPS/SER/UnB and had as objective aimed to reveal the configuration of student participation in collegiate management spaces of student assistance of Brazilian IFES. The study is part of the debate on democracy, management and participation and is, specifically, located in the relationship between the management of the student assistance policy of Brazilian Federal Institutions of University Education (IFES) and the collegiate mechanisms of student participation in management of this same policy. Anchored in the approach of historical and dialectical materialism, the study sought - through bibliographical, documental and field research - to apprehend the structure and dynamics of the empirical-historical materiality about student participation in collegiate spaces of student assistance management in 63 federal universities, illustrating such participation from the particular reality of UFT. The study starts from the premise that participation constitutes the central foundation of democracy and that the democratic management of public policies presupposes the effective involvement of society in its planning, implementation and evaluation process. Therefore, in view of the theoretical and empirical-documentary evidence of the research, the study supports the thesis that student participation in collegiate spaces of management of the student assistance policy of Brazilian IFES is essential to the fight for rights, to the construction of democracy in these institutions and in society, as well as to the students citizenship development. However, contradictorily, student participation in these spaces is configured, tendentially, as a functional participation for the logic of managerial management, tending to contribute more to legitimizing management practices incompatible with the principles of democratic management than to ensuring of democratic control through end effective dispute of the power of decision relative to management of the said policy.
