| Abstract: | This thesis is based upon research that sought to analyse the modes in which contemporary Cordel Literature1 legitimises and/or questions neoliberal logic in its nullifying of the State (Bourdieu, 1997, 1998) and its subsequent aggravating of social risk and isolation in Brazilian society (Buarque, 1999, 2001, 2003). In light of this, Criticai Discourse Analysis is used as a theory and method in the linguistic-discursive analysis of a corpus made up of four cordel booklets on childhood in the streets (Chouliaraki & Fairclough, 1999; Fairclough, 1989, 2001, 2003). Based upon Fairclough’s proposal regarding the simultaneous and dialectical operation of three main principies in text meanings (2003), the booklets were considered according to their action, representation and identification meanings. In terms of action meaning, generic structure and intertextuality were studied; for representation meaning, interdiscursivity and the meaning of the expression ‘Street children’ were taken into account; and for identification meaning, modality and evaluation were examined. The corpus was extended through ethnographic work, employed as a methodology in conjunction with Criticai Discourse Analysis so as to better understand discursive and social practices embedded in current Cordel production, as well as to better background the linguistic-discursive analyses. Various social actors involved in Cordel production were interviewed, including the authors and authoress of the booklets analysed. Research results indicate the internalisation of discourses that support a fatalist perception of neoliberal globalisation in the cordel. This contributes to highlighting how the mass distribution of such representations of the social world through various types of texts and institutional environments is an important aspect of hegemony. This is so given that the booklets studied here do not seek, evidently, to legitimise neoliberalism and isolation, but, nonetheless, through the internalisation of their discourses end up in many instances legitimising the same. Nevertheless, there are also instances in the booklets studied in which both hegemonic discourses as well as their legitimacy are questioned. This illustrates how discourse constitutes a space of struggle geared towards overcoming situations of domination as well as disarticulating hegemonies. |
