| Abstract: | Caryocar brasiliense Cambess., a Cerrado native species, is important in the Brazilian regional cuisine. The commercial exploitation of the species is done largely in an extractive way, with the cultivation of the species being limited by the difficulty of seedlings producing, and also by the lack of information on the species vegetative propagation. With that in mind, this work aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of several aspects of the air layering technique in the clonal propagation of C. brasiliense, as some studies report the rooting possibility of cuttings and air layers of the species. For this, four air layering experiments were carried out in the Distrito Federal region, seeking to evaluate different air layering treatments. The first trial was carried out in 2019 and evaluated the ideal diameter range for tree stems, with the following diameters being tested: < 15; 15-19; 20-24; 25-29; >29 mm in two native stock plants. The second trial was carried out at Embrapa Cerrados, Distrito Federal, in which the effects of 10 substrates on the rooting characteristics of C. brasiliense air layers were evaluated. In the third experiment, the influence of 10 pequi stock plants genotypes on the rooting speed and callousing of air layers was evaluated. And finally, in the fourth experiment, the ideal time (season) for installing air layers in the Distrito Federal region was evaluated. The results obtained demonstrate that the ideal diameter range for C. brasiliense air layering is between 20 and 29mm, as it provides the best percentages of survival (>95%), callusing (>95%) and rooting (>40%), in terms of substrate, Bioplant®, material with the best physical and chemical characteristics, provided the best results, reaching up to 100% survival and 75% rooting and greater rooting vigor. It was also observed that substrates with lower bulk density, air and water volume were ideal for air layering, while substrates with higher phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and cation exchange capacity positively influenced the air layering. Thus, a suitable substrate for pequi tree layering has apparent density lower than 0.276 g cm-3 , 40% air volume and 35% for water volume. The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus contents must be higher than 7 cmolc dm-3 , 3.5 cmolc dm-3 and 3.5 mg dm-3 , respectively. Regarding the genotype, differences in callusing and rooting speed were observed, demonstrating that some genotypes may be more suitable for the air layering process. In this trial, three pequi tree matrices were selected for future studies of seedling production. It was observed that the best month of installation of the air layer was September (early spring), which provided 100% survival, callus formation and rooting. In comparison, July (winter period) provided 65% of survival and 25% of rooting of air layers. The results obtained in the four air layering studies demonstrate that the technique can be viable in the production of cloned seedlings of the species Caryocar brasiliense Cambess, and in some cases percentages of survival and rooting of air layers of 100% were observed. |
