Abstract: Historically, most of the Brazilian sugarcane production was concentrated in the Southeast region, mainly on the Atlantic Forest biome in the state of São Paulo. However, in the last two decades, sugarcane production has been rapidly introduced in the Cerrado, the second largest biome in South America and covers approximately 25% of the country, including an important fraction of São Paulo state. This biome was initially considered unsuitable for agriculture due to its poor soils fertility. However, research and technological development, together with a landscape very favorable to agricultural mechanization, allowed the Cerrado biome to become one of the most productive regions of the country and the globe. The understanding of the edaphoclimatic characteristics of a given region and its interactions are essential for defining the production environment and adoption of proper management strategies. The intensive demand of time, labor and cost to characterize the production environment, currently carried out by conventional soil sampling, is a great challenge. Therefore, it is indispensable the development of methods and tools to characterize the sugarcane production environment faster and with lower operational costs. The remote sensing, through vegetation index analysis, could be an alternative to substitute or support the conventional method interpretating and the environment production potencial. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the suitability of vegetation indexes to distinguish environments of sugarcane production. It was also evaluated the most favorable crop age and weather season for maximum vegetation index differences between production environments. The work was carried analysing the sugarcane production environments of the Boa Vista Sugarmill, in the municipality of Quirinópolis - GO. Historical data from three agricultural years were used. The composition of NDVI and EVI2 vegetation indexes were calculated for 14 images of the Sentinel-2A satellite. The vegetation index for each image was than compared to the actual production environment, through a vector layer (shapefile) built by the sugarmill using the conventional method. The NDVI was not correlated to the production environments. The EVI2 was able to distinguish the biomass of different production environments. The greatest differences between average vegetation index values and, therefore, the best found strategy to distinguish sugarcane production environments using remote sensing was using the EVI2 for sugarcane fields with age between 180 and 240 days in the rainy season.
