Abstract:	Food irradiation is a unitary operation aimed at food safety and conservation. Although this technology has been available for several decades, most consumers are still unfamiliar with its fundamentals, misinterpreting its application and demonstrating a predominantly negative attitude towards foods treated with ionizing radiation. This research aimed, firstly, to carry out a systematic review on consumer’s awareness about the consumption of irradiated foods. Subsequently, the consumer's knowledge about irradiated food and the effect of complementary information on the attitude change of the individuals surveyed were evaluated. For the systematic review, five databases (PUBMED, SCOPUS, SCIENCE DIRECT, WEB OF SCIENCE and INIS) were searched. The search identified 1,192 studies, of which 66 articles met the inclusion criteria. To evaluate consumer’s knowledge about irradiated foods, a convenience sample composed of three sample groups, was studied: UnB employees, food science and technology specialists, and professors of the food engineering courses of Brazilian universities. The total number of respondents was 614. To evaluate the Collective Awareness Scale on Consumption of Irradiated Foods (CASCIF) an instrument has been developed and submitted to semantic tests and judge´s validation. The instrument composed of 32 items contemplated four construct factors: concepts, awareness, labeling and safety of irradiated foods. The data were collected by electronic means, using a survey. The results of the systematic review showed that most consumers are unaware of the benefits of irradiated foods. Based on the exploratory factorial analysis (EFA), 4 factors were selected: Safety of irradiated foods (15 items), Concepts (8 items), Labeling (5 items) and Awareness (3 items), that summarized the 31 items included. These factors represented 64.32% of the variance of items with adequate internal consistency. An Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) was conducted to evaluate the factor’s structure of the instrument, in addition to regression testing. It was verified that the instrument met the evidence validity criteria and consistency, proving to be an efficient tool for the evaluation of potential challenges and opportunities for the irradiated food markets. To verify the impact of complementary information on attitude change, the CASCIF instrument was applied in a quasi-experimental study in order to verify the significance of the influence of this information on the consumer's profile regarding irradiated foods. The quasi-experimental study consisted of three groups of students from the UnB nutrition course: two control groups and one intervention group. The data indicated that factor 4 (Awareness) was the only one to present a significant difference (p<0.05). It was concluded, therefore, that this factor was influenced by the positive and negative information presented. Factors 1 (Safety of Irradiated foods), 2 (Concepts) and 3 (Labeling) did not present significant differences (p>0.05), therefore, it was understood that the presentation of this information was not able to influence the change of sample attitude.
