Abstract: This work investigates aspects of the linguistic-cultural Tupí-Kawahíwa complex is investigated, focusing on the hypothesis which agrupates the Kayabí language to this complex. According to the internal classification of the Tupí-Guaraní Family, proposed by Rodrigues (1984-1985), this language, together with Asuriní do Xingu and Araweté were included into to branch V of that family. However, Rodrigues and Cabral (2002) considering new linguistic data from the languages of the Family have proposed, in the light of reviwed criteria and aditional ones a revision the association of Kayabí with languages of branch VI. In this perspective, the Kayabí, Amondáwa, Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, Karipúna, Piripkúra, Diahói, Parintintín, Tenharim, †Tupí-Kawahíb, Apiaká and Júma languages were analized as constituents of the o Kawahíb branch (RODRIGUES, CABRAL, 2012, p. 499). This dissertation seeks for more elements to strenghtening the hypothesis, which treats the Kayabí as a Kawahíwa language. This comparative work considers the linguistic descriptions of Kayabí and of the Tupí-Guaraní to branchs V (Asuriní do Xingu), VI (Parintintín, Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, Amondáwa, etc.), VI (Kamajurá) and VIII (Wayampí). The study follows the historical–comparative works by Rodrigues (1953, 1980, 1984-1985, 1985, 1996, 2001a, 2001b, 2001c, 2010 [1989]), Campbell (1998); Kaufman (1990); Hock, (1991); Thomason and Kaufman (1988), Meillet (1908, 1925, 1921), Hamp (1989), Lehman (1962), and Labov (1969). The results of the study show the closest genetic relationship of Kayabí with languages of to branch VI, contributing to the hypothesis of Rodrigues (1970a), and retaken in (RODRIGUES, CABRAL, 2002, 2012).
