| Abstract: | The map is one of the oldest forms of cultural expression, following the human evolutionary process. Recently, digital map representation of the earth's surface have replaced the physical formats. The landform digital representation allows the development of classification models from morphometric data. In this context, the general objective of this thesis is the development of a mapping method of landform main units (LMU) from hypsometric and clinographic metrics. The methodology is based on Boolean integration altimetry and slope range classes of a digital elevation model. The choice of these two morphometric parameters is related to our first perception of the earth's surface defining altimetry patterns and landscape slope. The hypsometric and slope intervals are defined from the curves that relate the altimetric amplitude and slope variations with the frequency area of these variables occurrence. The turning points and maximum hypsometric (Hif and Hmax) and clinographic inflection (Cif and Cmax) of these curves determine the limits of the range classes. The results show that the basins tested in different regions of Brazil with different relief patterns have LMU that relate to structural features of the landscape. The scale of LMU map depends on the basin order and the resolution of the input data. Studies have shown that the scale of 1:100,000 was obtained with 5 level ottobasin for SRTM-90 data. The case study showed the consistency of LMU in the São Bartolomeu basin in the Central Plateau, with the geomorphological map of Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) available on this scale. The 4 level ottobasin tested for Peripheral Depression, the Sea Hills of São Paulo and the Mato Grosso Pantanal Plain, were consistent with the geomorphological maps at 1:500,000 from the Geodiversity Program of Brazilian Geological Survey (CPRM). The proposed method of LMU delimitation as well as simple and replicable increases the ability to perform faster and large-scale geomorphological mapping. The LMU map of the São Bartolomeu basin needed only two hours work, while the method of color composite landform interpretation used in the map of Embrapa required hundreds hours work, always with of the subjectivity disadvantage. Thus, the proposed method has the potential to be used widely in tropical regions as one-step of systematic geomorphological mappings. |
