| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to identify, verify and understand the meaning of seventh-grade level students attribute to their experience of school visit to the zoo. Thus, we took into account the student's perspective on the topic, considering the socially produced information beliefs and knowledge they already recognize about this space. In this sense the notion of “meaning” that was adopted in this work to study the students’ narratives was the “expression of the mind” in the light of Jerome Bruner’s concepts of popular psychology and cultural psychology. The results showed that the meanings produced by the students regarding their extra school activities in the zoo evidence that their meaning about the zoo go beyond of recreation and visitation place. All narratives evidenced that students attach to the Zoo the function of knowledge’s seeking place and several narratives attributed the important role of "nature conservation" played by the zoo. In regards to the representations of students, there are clear evidences of the coexistence of the four different representations disseminated by the Zoos: recreation, education, research and conservation. It is possible to understand that the range of justifications recognized in the student’s narratives extrapolates individual perceptions and reach the level of cultural psychology. Likewise we recognize that the survival of zoos throughout the time and cultures was due to legitimization by societies that they are places of science and/or education, also places where populations can be entertained and in a more contemporary time Zoos are justifying their existence due to their roles in species conservation. Their meanings crossed several generations, while maintaining its primary function of animals’ exhibits, however, it is important to emphasize the quite old perception that the zoological institution plays an active social role as an space and tool for education. |
